Decisions, decisions - which layout to use?

I have finished all the Asterisk blocks as of about half an hour ago. This means it's layout time. I did the first layout organized by pattern and the second random-ish which would still need some blocks moved around (mind you this is in the area under the stairs on the first floor of my apartment building since it's the only open, unused large, flat space so I didn't spend a ton of time on the random-ish).

Note that in the random-ish layout, there are three of the plaid
diagonally together, so those would need to be swapped
with one of the dotted patterns - too much of a pattern there.

Let me know in the comments which one you like better. I'm leaning towards the random layout, and so far the couple votes I've already gotten off the blog go the same direction. I'm looking forward to finishing this one up since it's one I'm actually keeping for myself.

  1. I like the random one the best, but both look really wonderful.

    1. Thanks! I'm a huge fan of the whole Stitch in Color line especially this pear and turquoise color way. Check back next week to see which way I went.

  3. Yeah, that's a hard choice! Each time I start to say "This one," my brain says "No, this one!"

    1. You're not the only one whose brain is doing that back and forth. I love order and patterns and geometric design - hence making 30 of these asterisk blocks. Next week there will be a finished quilt too ooh and ahh at.

  4. Love the blocks, I would lean more toward organized pattern, but they both look great!

    1. Thanks! It was fun to make. I got my inspiration from City House Quilts and her asterisk - although hers is scrappy and mine is A Stitch in Color in the pear/turquoise color way, which I'm completely in love with.

  8. I've not seen this pattern yet, so it was fun to "discover" it today while commenting on link-ups. I vote for. . . either one! as I know once they're quilted and bound they'll be perfectly fine.

Thanks for stopping by Freshly Pieced today and posting your WIP link.

  9. I too, like them both and usually I am very random but am quite drawn to the first one. the pattern in the blocks themselves are so cool that the first one really showcases the block itself. Great job.

    1. Thanks! I had a lot of fun with this block - the basic tutorital is over at City House Studio. I've been vaccilating between the two lay outs for just that reason - the organized one showcases the block, but I love random.

    1. Check back next week to see. I've got a third layout that I played with yesterday, now, too. So many decisions especially since I'm keeping this one for me.

  11. Interesting how my experience differs. I noticed the block more in the irregular arrangement. My eye hit the dark blue and stayed on it a bit. On the diagonal arrangement, my eye hit the dark blue and moved up the diagonal line.

I prefer the irregular arrangement, but you may have it pieced by now.

Either arrangement, I like the block and the colors.

    1. It's not together yet. I've got a take home final that I'm working on right now, and an in class final on Thursday. Along with a full weekend of activities (including a Winter Classic road race on Sunday), I didn't spend time at my sewing machine, and now I'm in school mode. It'll probably come together Thursday afternoon once I finish the final.
